A traffic stop led to an arrest after two pursuits where the suspect fired his weapon multiple times, struck a deputy with his vehicle and crashed into a patrol vehicle

ADAMS COUNTY, CO (Friday, Nov. 21, 2025) – An Adams County Sheriff’s Office Deputy was injured following a traffic stop that occurred Thursday Night.  On Nov. 20, 2025, at 5:18 p.m. at Corona Street and Essex Drive, an Adams County Sheriff’s Office deputy initiated a traffic stop after observing a vehicle driving erratically, leading the deputies to believe the driver might be impaired. During the stop, the suspect fired several rounds in the air from a handgun and fled the scene, prompting a pursuit.

The driver was identified as 33-year-old Jason Lutz.  During the pursuit, Lutz threw a firearm out of the vehicle window before deputies temporarily lost sight of the vehicle.

While deputies remained on scene recovering the discarded handgun, Lutz returned in his vehicle.  Deputies attempted to take him into custody, but he fled again, firing additional rounds in the air as he drove away.  A responding deputy located the vehicle and gave commands for him to stop.  Lutz drove his vehicle around the patrol vehicle, striking the deputy in his leg with his vehicle before fleeing once more.

The pursuit continued to the area of Nueva Vista Drive and Jolene Circle, where Lutz drove into a cul-de-sac.  He then turned his vehicle around and drove into the patrol vehicle striking it head-on.  Deputies were able to take him into custody at that time.  There was a second firearm located in the vehicle.

The deputy struck by Lutz’s vehicle was evaluated on scene by paramedics. The same deputy, along with a Co-Responder who was inside the patrol vehicle during the collision, was further assessed following the head-on crash. Neither required transport to the hospital.

Deputies recovered multiple shell casings from the area where Lutz had fired his weapon.

Lutz was arrested and taken to the Adams County Detention Facility for the following charges:

18-3-202(1)(E)- 1st Degree Assault on a Peace Officer

18-9-116.5(1) -Vehicular Eluding

18-6-803.5(1)(A) – Violation of a Protection Order

42-2-138 (1)(A) – Driving Under Restraint

This case will be presented to the 17th Judicial District’s Office for the filing of charges.  All charges are merely accusations and suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
