“ON OR AFTER AUGUST 1, 2026, IT IS UNLAWFUL FOR ANY PERSON TO KNOWINGLY MANUFACTURE, DISTRIBUTE, TRANSFER, SELL, OR PURCHASE A SPECIFIED SEMIAUTOMATIC FIREARM; EXCEPT THAT A PERSON MAY SELL OR TRANSFER A SPECIFIED SEMIAUTOMATIC FIREARM TO AN INDIVIDUAL RESIDING IN ANOTHER STATE OR A FEDERALLY LICENSED FIREARM DEALER.”
**The Sheriff’s Role in the Senate Bill 25-003 is only to provide a Firearms Safety Course Eligibility Card. Meaning you are only getting approval to take a course. **
How to apply for an SSF Eligibility Card in Adams County
Visit the Colorado Parks and Wildlife website to start your application. They will begin accepting applications on July 20, 2026 at 9 a.m.
Appointments are not necessary, and walk-in services are available during operating hours
- Monday – Friday 8:30am to 12:00 pm, 1:30pm to 4:30 pm
*At this time we will only be accepting applicants who are ages 21 and up
SSF Fee & Payment Information
Adams County Sheriff’s Office Fee
- Adams County Resident: $50.00
- Out of County Resident: $100.00
Fixed CPW fee $52.00
Each applicant must pay individually. Accepted payment methods are:
- Cash
- Credit Cards (additional processing fee applies)
- Checks payable to Adams County Sheriff’s Office
*You will be charged these application fees whether your application is approved/denied*
Required Documentation
- Completed Application from CPW (a printed hard copy)
- Name-Based Background Check

Per statue the applicant must submit to the sheriff the results of a completed Name-Based background check of National and Colorado Public criminal history and Judicial databases. An attestation from the vendor that the background check was performed by the vendor must be provided as well.

Disclaimer: “A sheriff may deny or revoke an application for a firearms safety course eligibility card if the sheriff has reasonable belief that documented previous behavior by the applicant makes it likely the applicant will present a danger to themself or others if the applicant holds a card or if the cardholder cannot lawfully possess a firearm under state or federal law.”
Find a Verified Instructor
Firearms Safety courses must be taught by a specified semi-automatic verified instructor. A list of all SSF verified instructors is available on the CPW’s website.
Become a Verified Instructor
To become an SSF instructor you must be CHP verified and have passed the Train the Trainer course given by Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
