Compassionate Support for Victims of Crime, 24/7

The Victim Services Unit (VSU) of Adams County provides 24/7 crisis response, emotional support, and guidance to individuals and families impacted by crime or trauma. Our trained volunteers offer on-scene assistance, help you understand your rights under the Victims’ Rights Act, and support you through each step of the criminal justice process.

The Victim Services Unit offers compassionate, around-the-clock support to individuals and families affected by crime or crisis in Adams County. Our trained advocates provide emotional care, help you understand your rights, and connect you with the resources needed to begin healing.

The Victim Services Unit (VSU) is a volunteer-based program serving unincorporated Adams County. The VSU operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to provide on-scene crisis intervention to victims and families of criminal and critical incidents.

Understanding your rights as they pertain to the Victims’ Rights Act (VRA).

  • Assisting you with a long-term safety plan that could help you and/or your family remain safe.
  • Determining which local resources will ensure that your household remains functional.
  • Leaving informational material to help answer questions that may develop along the way.

Answering questions about the criminal justice process and what will likely happen next.

How to seek financial compensation and the eligibility requirements for expenses incurred as a result of a crime defined in the VRA.

  • Assisting you, and/or your family, with concerns about safety and security immediately following a criminal incident.
  • To help contact family, friends, employers on your behalf when the words are too difficult to say.
  • Explaining the emotional burden you may experience as a result of the incident.

U-Visa Program

The U visa program is designed to support law enforcement in investigating and prosecuting crimes such as domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, and other offenses. It also provides protection for undocumented individuals or those with temporary immigration status who have experienced significant physical or emotional harm as a result of these crimes. To qualify, victims must be willing to cooperate with authorities during the investigation and legal process related to the crime.

Colorado Sex Assault Kit Tracking System (COSAK)

HB 23-1199, signed into law on May 25, 2023, directs the Department of Public Safety to create and maintain a statewide tracking system by June 30, 2025. This system allows survivors to monitor the status of their sexual assault evidence collection kits (SANE kits).

If you are a survivor, you can check the status of your Sexual Assault Evidence (SAFE) kit online.

The Track It system is designed to help survivors, medical providers, law enforcement, and forensic laboratories track sexual assault exam records. It provides access to information related to forensic nurse exam (FNE) medical records. Please note that this system only includes kits processed on or after July 1, 2025.

If your kit was submitted before that date—or if you no longer have your SAFE kit number—contact the victim assistance program directly for support @ victimadvocates@adamssheriffco.gov or 720.322.1240.

Victim Notifications

Colorado VINE (Victim Information and Notification Everyday) is a free, automated service that allows crime victims and concerned individuals in Colorado to track the custody status of offenders in the state’s correctional system. Users can receive notifications via phone, text, email, or web alerts when an offender’s custody status changes, such as being released, transferred, or having a parole hearing scheduled. The service helps victims stay informed and maintain safety by providing timely updates about offenders.

How to Sign Up for Colorado VINE

  1. Visit the Colorado VINE website: VINELink – Colorado
  2. Search for the offender: Enter their first and last name and select the correct record.

  3. Register for notifications: Choose how you want to be alerted (phone, text, or email).

  4. Enter your contact info and PIN: Provide your info and create a 4-digit PIN to confirm alerts.

  5. Confirm and start receiving updates: Follow any confirmation prompts to complete registration. You’ll get automatic notifications when the offender’s custody status changes.

Victims Compensation

Crime victims in Adams County may be eligible for financial assistance to help cover expenses resulting from their victimization. The Adams County District Attorney’s Crime Victim Compensation Fund was created to support victims by using fines and penalties paid by convicted offenders, not taxpayer money, to address crime-related financial and personal hardships.
