BRIGHTON, Colo. (Thursday, May 14, 2026) – On Wednesday, May 14, the Adams County Sheriff’s Office joined our regional partners in a traffic enforcement operation targeting expired registrations throughout Adams County. The regional partners included the Brighton Police Department, Commerce City Police Department, and the Thornton Police Department.

During the operation, which ran from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., in unincorporated Adams County alone, the Sheriff’s Office made 110 traffic stops, resulting in 71 citations, three impounds, and three arrests. The arrests were for warrants and a small amount of drugs.

“Expired plates and registrations are often raised as concerns within the community,” said Adams County Sheriff Gene Claps. “Operations like this reinforce our commitment to listening to our residents and addressing the issues that matter most to them.”

The operation also resulted in two commercial motor vehicles being taken out of service for multiple violations, including expired registration.

“This operation isn’t just about expired plates and registrations,” Sheriff Claps said. “It’s also about addressing unsafe driving behaviors and other traffic-related issues throughout the county. Conducting these targeted traffic operations promotes accountability and helps keep our roadways safer for all Adams County residents.”

This is the second such operation in Adams County in recent months. In August 2025, the first operation took place, resulting in almost 400 stops, 295 citations issued, 16 vehicles towed, and 13 arrests over a 12-hour period. These statistics included the other departments that participated.

Residents with expired plates are encouraged to contact the Adams County Motor Vehicle Office at 720-523-6010 or visit the Motor Vehicle Office page at adamscountyco.gov to renew their registration online.

We would like to thank all of our law enforcement partners who participated in this operation with us. Our partnership and collaboration help improve traffic safety and enhance the overall quality of life in Adams County.
